On behalf of the Maastricht University community, I would like to welcome you! Welcome in Maastricht and welcome at our lively and lovely Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience.
Maastricht, the locals say Mestreech, is the most southern city of the Netherlands. It is surrounded by Belgium and Germany; their borders are just a few kilometers away. We are in the center of this so-called Euregion. Maastricht is the oldest city of the Netherlands and it definitely is the most beautiful and charming city. It is an exciting student city, with about 17,000 students over a population of 122,000. The south of Limburg, where Maastricht is located, is the only part of our country that has some modest hills. The remainder of the country is as flat as a dime - and below sea level, can you imagine it?
The first thing you therefore should do is: buy a bike. Dutch people always travel by bike; even your dean bikes. It is not just the best way to travel from your home to the university buildings - it is only a 10-minutes bike ride from downtown to Randwyck where our Faculty building is located - you will also feel very cool and Dutch when you bike.
We hope you will encounter a lot of gezelligheid in Maastricht. Gezelligheid is a very Dutch word, every Dutch student knows what gezelligheid is, but it is the most difficult word to translate. If you understand what gezelligheid means, you will be a Dutchman among the Dutch. When it is gezellig, a Dutch habit is to eat a lot of vlaai. Vlaai is a typical southern Flan, it is delicious and that is why the locals (Sjengen) always eat two pieces. You should definitely try the rice Flan, it is one of the best.
Of course, it is not only gezelligheid that we strive for. We will offer you an exciting psychology programme that is cutting-edge. Problem-based learning in small groups is our philosophy. In these small groups, you work on fascinating scientific problems. You will work in a very international environment; the share of international students at our faculty is more than 50%. Students come from universities all over the world. We look forward to adding you to our international classroom.
So, you will get the opportunity to broaden and deepen your knowledge of psychology within a vibrant and rich learning environment formed by a socially and culturally diverse community of students and staff. We sincerely hope that our programme will meet your academic expectations and that your stay in Maastricht turns out to be one of the very best and unforgettable experiences in your life. Enjoy!
